They tangle in his matted hair

And form a halo of autumnal fire

Sketchbook Watercolor, "The Party's Over"

Just a page from an old sketchbook. It seems like I have volumes of these, with worn out covers from miles and miles on the road. This one is from 2003, we grew these in the backyard. It seems like sunflowers are at their best when droopy and the leaves are crispy from the heat. On Arches 140lb coldpress paper. SOLD

Hung Out to Dry

It has been incredibly dry in the Ohio River Valley, crispy is the word that comes to mind. I almost missed these drying sunflowers at the Farmer's Market in Lebanon, hanging on one of the poles that supports a tent. This one will make a great feast for the Cardinals and Jays, that is unless that pesky squirrel figures out a way to it first.

Peppers and a Jar of Beets

As with most artists I am forever on the lookout for new things to paint. I found these beets in Lebanon, Ohio at a farm and store called the Black Barn. I thought they would make an interesting subject when sunlight passed through the jar. What was a nice surprise was the way the sunlight passed through the openings in the basket and how it landed on the napkin. I used a limited palette of Winsor red, permanent rose, aureolin, cobalt blue and windsor green. I tried the Sennlier 140lb cold press again, I'm ok with the final result but had to fight the paper a little. 7"X7." Watercolor, $100.00

7" X 7" Watercolor on Winsor Newton Paper. Many watercolor artists prefer Arches paper as it can really take a beating. If you add masking fluid as I did here to preserve whites during the initial washes, you can really scrub Arches to soften the lines between the white and the color. However, my favorite paper is Winsor Newton 140 lb cold press. When laying down washes it just seems to glow, although it will pill and tear if you scrub too hard. I laid down a wash of Winsor Red, Aureolin and Ultramarine blue. These were the primary colors throughout the painting process with the addition of Permanent Rose, and yes (!) just a light glaze of Opera on a few of the petals. The greens were mixed with Aureolin and Ultramarine blue, and at the end a few glazes of Winsor Green for a little more punch. I love working with watercolor it has a luminosity that can't be matched with oils.
If you ever have the opportunity to take a watercolor workshop with Nita Engle or Ted Minchin it is well worth the experience. Both of these artists not only combine talent and technical knowledge in their workshops, but also great spirit. http://www.dillmans.com/

Hot Pepper Jelly

7"x7" Watercolor on Sennelier paper. The jelly was given to me by a friend, she advised me it was very hot. (I've yet to open it!) The napkin is part of a set with a matching tablecloth that was stitched by my grandmother and given to us as a wedding gift.

The shift between painting with watercolor and oil gets easier, as long as I don't abandon one or the other for too long. I teach watercolor classes every now and again, and the hardest thing for students is to lay the wash down and believe in it. It takes patience as each layer must dry before a new layer of paint is applied. You can see a few of my earlier watercolors on my website http://www.lindamccoyart.com/

This little glass pumpkin was a gift from my daughter Julie. It stays out all year round, and I've often thought I would like to paint it. Colors of Summer

I love the Farmer's Markets. I usually frequent the one in Lebanon, Ohio, but my daughter convinced me to try another. This one is in Wyoming, a lovely area of Cincinnati. One farmer had white eggplant, which was the inspiration for the painting. The greenish color tomato is named "Black Prince." One vendor was making Belgium Waffles filling the air with an aroma to die for.

An Invitation

This painting is for Artmakr Week-end. The theme is "An Invitation." This painting represents an invitation to return to New Orleans. I picked up the little Harlequin ornament when I visited, before Hurricane Katrina. When asked to submit a painting that represented this week's subject, I thought of all the typical ideas but none had much meaning. When I woke this morning the little face was staring at me from shelf. It took the better part of the day to complete her. http://artmakrweekend.com/
