Homeward Bound, Hummingbird

Homeward Bound, Hummingbird

This painting is from a reference photo I took last September. About the end of September and into early October the Hummingbirds begin their migration south. It's a long journey and their feeders stay up until late in October, for any late comers. It's always a joy to see them again in the spring, I haven't seen any yet, but maybe soon.

Here is a photograph of the same bird....

These birds seemed to be everywhere except my yard. I waited and waited for one to show up at my feeder, but no. So, out last week at a local park I hadn't been to before and there it was! I was so excited I grabbed my camera and crept as close as I could to take some reference photographs. There are no words for how blue he was, incredible, and then the rust/orange breast feathers! I don't paint birds I haven't actually seen and I work from my own reference drawings and photographs. I waited a long time for this guy, and he was so worth the wait.

Graeter's Raspberry Chocolate Chip/Row House Gallery

I am honored to be selected as Artist of the Month at the Row House Gallery in Milford, Ohio.

It is a great opportunity to meet collectors, and there is just something wonderful to be said about seeing artwork in a gallery setting.  I will be there on Saturday, April, 8 from 5pm until 7:30pm.

Many thanks to Nancy at the Row House!

So, about Graeter’s Raspberry Chocolate Chip Ice Cream, it is their signature flavor, loaded with huge chunks of chocolate. My favorite!

Still looking for nesting material, I see one bird taking some nesting material out of the nest, so perhaps they have decided to nest in a different spot. It's noisy on my deck, the Red-Wing Blackbirds are loud and rowdy, scaring off some of the smaller birds. As soon as the fields are planted they will be gone. Two nesting boxes are occupied by House Sparrows, but I am unable to get a good photo of them. I enjoyed this series of these happy, energetic little Carolina Chickadee's.

Working with a new color from Williamsburg handmade oil colors called "Provence Violet Bluish. A very pretty color! The little glass is from a store in Lebanon, Ohio; Rose and Remington. I think the top is made to hold a place card at a table setting.

Allen's Hummingbird Painted from Live Streaming

So this is the story of Bella, an Allen's Hummingbird that I painted from a live stream. It took me three days of observing and trying to manage the changing light. What an experience. As for Bella, as I write this around noon on Wednesday, she now has her babies.  You can watch her by following the link. I should note that I wrote an email to explore.org to ask them if it was a copyright infringement to paint from a live feed, and they were extremely nice and told me it was not. So here she is, Mama Bella. :) Many thanks to explore.org for posting this little bird!

One of the prettiest birds to visit the feeders, he comes and eats for a few days and then disappears for awhile. He usually eats insects and nuts, but occasionally I will see him at the back tree line munching on berries. One of my favorite birds.

Baby Boy, Hummingbird

This little hummingbird was born in August of last year. The male hummingbirds are born with a white throat like the female, soon their red iridescent feathers come in one or two at a time. You can see the little bird I used as a reference from the photo below.
He's traveled south for the winter, but hopefully he will return in the spring.
My nickname for him is Houston.

A lovely lady sent me a picture of this little pansy cake. It's rare that someone just says "yes" when you ask them if they would like a piece of cake. They always ask for a little piece. Silly. Eat the cake, drink the wine!  I don't know how this cake tasted, but I bet it was good. Maybe it was filled with strawberries...or custard...or chocolate....or raspberries. I'm just dreaming here, this is just a painting. I wonder if the bakery is open late....

I often see the grey and white Junco's that migrate to the Ohio River Valley during the winter. They fly down from Canada and stay until breeding time comes in the spring. This year I have this lovely buff colored female. She's shy, but manages to find a few seeds on the deck when she thinks no one is looking :)

Santa Ornament Painting 2016, Linda McCoy

I
This is my fourth ornament painting this year and as in the others, I put him in the holly bush in our yard. Yes, his beard got hopelessly tangled in the spikey holly leaves. I managed to get him out unscathed. In the bottom photo I listed the colors over the color swatch on the board for those interested in the palette I used. Most of these colors are Old Holland, the white is Blue Ridge, and the Radiant Turquoise is from Gamblin. I also tried a new medium which I loved, DeMayerne Medium, from Blue Ridge Artist Supply. This is just an ornament with a plastic face but there was lots of texture in the beard, so it was a lot of fun to paint. I'm working on two commissions so no posts for awhile. Happy Holidays!

The color is almost gone now, leaves are pouring from the trees.  However, a drive through the backroads last week-end was gorgeous. One of those days when the sun is bright in a cloudless sky. Many abandoned structures can be seen from the road as the fields have been cut, this one was settled in waiting for winter.

Yes, a little early, but to allow for drying time, I needed to begin in November. The ornament reflections are the tree line in my back yard. My holly bush is holding up well, the birds have yet to discover the delicious berries; but soon they will be gone.

Autumn is in full force here in Ohio, and during a walk to a park nearby I spotted this Titmouse sitting in the berries. They were offset by bluish purple flowers in the field, my guess is bachelor buttons. These little birds are nervous, their grey color makes them interesting to paint, warm grey, cool grey, and some tan colors. Often birds are depicted with their feet wrapped around branches like coils, but I find they just relax them much of the time. Pretty little birds. Glad he decided to pose.
