I lived in Detroit for a few years where, as you would imagine Aretha Franklin is an institution. An associate named Cynthia came into my office one Monday morning and said "Linda you will never guess who was at church yesterday......Aretha Franklin! She came in wearing a gorgeous hat and she sang with us!" I asked Cynthia how it was. "Linda, she ROCKED the house!" How wonderful that she returns to the church she once attended in her youth and still sings with the congregation.

This is her as she sang "My Country 'tis of Thee" for the inauguration. I think she did a great job. How fortunate we are to have her as a national treasure.

My favorite of her recordings? Why "Freeway of Love" of course!

Are You Talkin' to Me?

Summer is long gone and so are the little hummingbirds, but not before I was able to spend many hours on the deck watching, sketching, photographing. They love the dead tree next to the deck and that's where their feeders are hung. They were busy all summer, drinking, fighting with their friends and raising babies. They don't nest in the dead tree, not enough foliage, but I think they nest in the huge evergreen out in front. When they are resting, they are just like any other bird, preening, flitting from branch to branch, and sometimes napping. Way too cute!

By the Sea

10"x10" Oil. The coffee pot was purchased in Indiana while my daughter was visiting for the summer. This was a fun painting especially of the lobster graphic. It's a nice reminder of a really lovely day!

The Fledgling

Quite a few new chickadee's this year, busy now chasing each other around the yard. The glass pumpkin is from the Renaissance Festival in Waynesville, Ohio. A fun painting to do, but it took some time. Everyday they look in the window, begging for peanuts. I always give in and put a few on the deck railing. They are fearless, sometimes picking up a peanut and then putting it down only to choose another. Picky! They are now teaching their babies to grab and run. There were six Jay's in the tree this morning making a racket.

They were beautiful this year.  A warm winter and then plenty of spring rain made for huge blooms, heady with their fragrant sweet scent and the promise of summer. They only lasted a few days, standing tall in the sun and swaying in the soft breeze. Then, as in years before, the hard rains came and mercilessly pounded them until the petals fell, one by one onto the wet earth.

I sit out on the deck every morning the weather permits. The Mulberry tree is laden with fruit and the birds are drunk on the fermenting berries. The robins, noisy and happy for the feast are chasing each other through the trees. This morning a male and female Mallard Ducks were sitting under that tree. Were they hoping for the tree to relinquish a few berries? I’m not sure; I don’t live near water so they must have been waiting for a berry feast. They lumbered off waddling side to side disappointed the tree wouldn’t cooperate.

Lots of baby birds have been born, Chickadees, Robins, Cardinals, Sparrows, and a squawky baby Blue Jay. The noisy Wren is relentless in his call for a mate, I hope he finds one soon.  Ah, Spring!

Homeward Bound, Hummingbird

Homeward Bound, Hummingbird

This painting is from a reference photo I took last September. About the end of September and into early October the Hummingbirds begin their migration south. It's a long journey and their feeders stay up until late in October, for any late comers. It's always a joy to see them again in the spring, I haven't seen any yet, but maybe soon.
