We had our first snow a few days ago, and the birds were busy in the early morning light. I watched for awhile, and in particular, this little Carolina Wren. I was lucky enough to capture a photo of him as he experienced, what might be his first snow. He seemed a little bewildered to me and I hope I have expressed this feeling in the painting.
Autumn has definitely arrived in Ohio. The Dahlia's that bloomed so beautifully all summer are now sleeping. I set this still life up on the deck, and it took me days to get the reference photo I was looking for. The chickadee cooperated, lured closer to the jug by a few seeds and nuts. The jug is a favorite new prop, purchased at Rose and Remmington here in Ohio.
5"x7" Oil on gessobord. Yes, that's the correct spelling for gessobord, but autocorrect doesn't like it. Gessobord is a product made by Ampersand, archival with a smooth surface which I prefer.

This is a repost from January 22, 2009. Farewell, Aretha.
I lived in Detroit for a few years where, as you would imagine Aretha Franklin is an institution. An associate named Cynthia came into my office one Monday morning and said "Linda you will never guess who was at church yesterday......Aretha Franklin! She came in wearing a gorgeous hat and she sang with us!" I asked Cynthia how it was. "Linda, she ROCKED the house!" How wonderful that she returns to the church she once attended in her youth and still sings with the congregation.
This is her as she sang "My Country 'tis of Thee" for the inauguration. I think she did a great job. How fortunate we are to have her as a national treasure.
My favorite of her recordings? Why "Freeway of Love" of course!
