Both baby portraits were taken from photographs I took at David and Rachel's shower. At the time, I was taken with both babies because they were so absorbed in all activities in the room. Presents were being opened, little cake balls with colorful sprinkles on top were irresistible and so were glasses decorated with aqua polka-dot bows. They watched and took in everything. It's typical I guess to take pictures of the babies when they are smiling, but there is something about their little faces when they are simply watching and learning.  So inquisitive!

Larry, Dreaming of Swedish Fish

So who is Larry? He is a gifted guitar player, he loves to draw, he is very devoted to his family and he loves Swedish Fish candy. My sisters and I always teased him that he was mom's favorite, but then who could resist those blue eyes? Larry was here for a visit recently and he posed for me. We had a great time, everyone is always glad to see him. Anyway, here he is. I loved painting this, I tried really hard not to fiddle too much with the details.

I know you are supposed to trim the stems of the flowers, taking off the bottom leaves so they don't end up in the water, but I like the abstract shapes and colors of the foliage.
Maybe I'll trim them next time.  Sold

Mother, daughter, sister, artist and now teacher. Congratulations Julie!

Julie was here for a visit with her children over the holiday. We went shopping one day to a place called “Charming Charlie’s.”  This store would satisfy anyone’s desire to go crazy with accessories. A mere twelve thousand square feet of necklaces, scarves, purses, earrings, leggings, and more.  Everything is arranged by color. I felt I was in the movie “Alice in Wonderland.”

 I’ve wanted to paint Julie for some time so when I spotted this necklace I thought “that might be fun to paint.”

So on went the necklace. Too big for Julie, but it was sparkly, and went she sat in the sunshine everything lit up, her face, hair and of course the too big necklace. When I went to paint it I toned down the lights on the necklace and kept the colors cool, so the colors in the necklace didn’t overtake her face.

I had the not so brilliant idea that I would send the necklace around to women I know, have them pose in the necklace, and then mail it on to the next woman on the list.  You know, sort of like the “Sisters of the Traveling Pants” only this would be sisters of the traveling too big necklace.  I thought I would do a hundred or so of these paintings, and then some New York Gallery would trip over themselves to have a showing of the paintings of women in the necklace. Was I crazy? Suffering from delusions? Perhaps too much eggnog for the holiday?  I imagine that the logistics and trying to keep track of the thing would be an adventure in and of itself. (Where is it today? Chicago with Linda? Wisconsin with Marge? Scottsville  with Sharon? Back in Cincinnati with Rachel? No, it’s in New York with Geri who had to be tied to a chair to wear it.)  

Well I’ve already exhausted myself just thinking about it. So, here is the lovely Julie in the one and only painting of the necklace. Well maybe.

IceFest, Hamilton Ohio

I will be exhibiting in the Icefest in Hamilton, Ohio in the Government Services Building. This is a great event, with Ice Sculpture artists from all over the country. The sculptures will be lit at night and visitors can stroll down Main Street to view them.
I will be exhibiting with other artists, in the warmth of the Government Services Building stop by and say hello!

"Haulin' Pears" Vintage Toy Truck, Oil Painting by Linda McCoy

This little truck is someone’s history. Who knows who it belonged to, how many family members played with it or what their life was like growing up. I wonder about vintage things, they come to us bearing the baggage of their past but they don’t tell. Ah, but the wear marks are telling. This truck was made by MARX. Probably in the 30’s sometime and it was really played with. The yellow is still pretty bright despite its age but some of the rusty areas are worn to the steel. Must have been left out under the porch during rainstorms. Sold

I started this painting in summer before our pears ripened.

I have to go, there’s an episode of American Pickers on. Or is it Antique Roadshow?

Knock Out Roses 2, Oil on canvas by Linda McCoy

During a trip to Chicago this summer we had a lovely family gathering at Linda and Ron's house. After a great brunch and afternoon we left for the long ride home, but not before I took some photo's of Linda's Roses. Beautiful and delicate in color, you could feel the warmth of the sun in each petal. In this case I just abstracted them from my photo reference, hopefully I captured some of the energy of that day.
