This is my fourth ornament painting this year and as in the others, I put him in the holly bush in our yard. Yes, his beard got hopelessly tangled in the spikey holly leaves. I managed to get him out unscathed. In the bottom photo I listed the colors over the color swatch on the board for those interested in the palette I used. Most of these colors are Old Holland, the white is Blue Ridge, and the Radiant Turquoise is from Gamblin. I also tried a new medium which I loved, DeMayerne Medium, from Blue Ridge Artist Supply. This is just an ornament with a plastic face but there was lots of texture in the beard, so it was a lot of fun to paint. I'm working on two commissions so no posts for awhile. Happy Holidays!

The color is almost gone now, leaves are pouring from the trees.  However, a drive through the backroads last week-end was gorgeous. One of those days when the sun is bright in a cloudless sky. Many abandoned structures can be seen from the road as the fields have been cut, this one was settled in waiting for winter.

Yes, a little early, but to allow for drying time, I needed to begin in November. The ornament reflections are the tree line in my back yard. My holly bush is holding up well, the birds have yet to discover the delicious berries; but soon they will be gone.

Autumn is in full force here in Ohio, and during a walk to a park nearby I spotted this Titmouse sitting in the berries. They were offset by bluish purple flowers in the field, my guess is bachelor buttons. These little birds are nervous, their grey color makes them interesting to paint, warm grey, cool grey, and some tan colors. Often birds are depicted with their feet wrapped around branches like coils, but I find they just relax them much of the time. Pretty little birds. Glad he decided to pose.

Our bird feeder hangs on a shepherd's hook, high above the deck. The birds roost in the evergreen below, and during the short flight to the feeder, the morning sun captures their wings in a most magnificent way. The light pours through the feathers, but there are also deep shadow areas the sun doesn't illuminate. So amazing, these little moments.

This is another of my "I'm here to eat, then you can paint us" backyard birds.  The warm winter sun settles on them like a soft blanket as they glide back and forth from the bushes to the feeder. I try not to disturb them as I sketch and photograph; sometimes my patience is rewarded with an image I can translate into a painting. I silently thank them, and hope that I will get a glimpse of another fleeting moment tomorrow.

There is a place called Raptor, Inc, in Milford, Ohio where injured birds are nursed back to health and released back into the wild if possible. I was with a photography group on Saturday and was able to photograph these magnificent creatures. I was drawn to this Kestrel because of his beautiful markings.

It is seldom that all  things I love as an artist come together in one image. We were at Voice of America Park Sunday morning, and this little sparrow was perched on a rusted barbeque. I waited and waited for him to land on the handle,  finally he did, and posed perfectly. I love the rusty abstract elements combined with realism. I will leave you to ponder why I chose the Dutch language in my title, with much thanks to fellow painter, Rene' PleinAir for confirming the translation. :)

All summer I watched these little birds frolic at the feeder. I noticed this little guy in the Plum tree, and was a little surprised by the orange coloring. I did a little research, and just as I thought he is a Ruby Throated Hummingbird, however in the non-mating season the male feather color turns orange. He was spectacular in the sunlight. Hummingbirds will rest awhile and I was able to make a few quick sketches and photograph him. It was early autumn, but he was already thinking of heading south. I hope he is warm wherever he happened to land.
