7" X 7" Watercolor on Winsor Newton Paper. Many watercolor artists prefer Arches paper as it can really take a beating. If you add masking fluid as I did here to preserve whites during the initial washes, you can really scrub Arches to soften the lines between the white and the color. However, my favorite paper is Winsor Newton 140 lb cold press. When laying down washes it just seems to glow, although it will pill and tear if you scrub too hard. I laid down a wash of Winsor Red, Aureolin and Ultramarine blue. These were the primary colors throughout the painting process with the addition of Permanent Rose, and yes (!) just a light glaze of Opera on a few of the petals. The greens were mixed with Aureolin and Ultramarine blue, and at the end a few glazes of Winsor Green for a little more punch. I love working with watercolor it has a luminosity that can't be matched with oils.

Hot Pepper Jelly

7"x7" Watercolor on Sennelier paper. The jelly was given to me by a friend, she advised me it was very hot. (I've yet to open it!) The napkin is part of a set with a matching tablecloth that was stitched by my grandmother and given to us as a wedding gift.

The shift between painting with watercolor and oil gets easier, as long as I don't abandon one or the other for too long. I teach watercolor classes every now and again, and the hardest thing for students is to lay the wash down and believe in it. Colors of Summer

I love the Farmer's Markets. I usually frequent the one in Lebanon, Ohio, but my daughter convinced me to try another. This one is in Wyoming, a lovely area of Cincinnati. One farmer had white eggplant, which was the inspiration for the painting. The greenish color tomato is named "Black Prince." One vendor was making Belgium Waffles filling the air with an aroma to die for.

An Invitation

This painting is for Artmakr Week-end. The theme is "An Invitation." This painting represents an invitation to return to New Orleans. I picked up the little Harlequin ornament when I visited, before Hurricane Katrina. When asked to submit a painting that represented this week's subject, I thought of all the typical ideas but none had much meaning.
