Opera Del Duomo, Orvieto

Here is another of the Italian doorways, this one is in Orvieto, a small and lovely hill town between Florence and Rome. The Duomo there is magnificent, architecture, art, it has it all.  You take a lift up to the town, from there you can see the beautiful countryside. This door says “Opera del Duomo,” and it is positioned across the Piazza to the right as you face the Duomo.  The Cathedral steps are dangerous, two people in our group fell, there is a narrow trough of stone right at the bottom of the stairway; wear flat shoes!  I loved this town and this is one of my favorite doorways.

Sunrise

When I was a kid we visited  Field Museum in Chicago often. Their butterfly collection was large, colorful and now, years later still inspirational. It's not hard to figure out where many textile patterns and their color combinations come from. I think this is a Sunset butterfly, but I named the painting "Sunrise" because that's where hope lives.   Sold

After the Rain, Painting by Linda McCoy

It's easy to over paint and over complicate water drops. I keep it really simple, paint the shadow (looks like a smile!) and highlight with one drop of white. I used a number 1 small round brush.  Nothing else is really necessary; the drops are transparent so the color they sit on does not need adjustment. The more you paint and fuss with them, the more contrived they look.

While in Italy a few years ago, I photographed every door I possibly could. Friends thought I was crazy, but stop we did at every doorway I felt I needed to paint. This is one of them. I have about a jillion doorways to go. I like that they are aged and scruffy, I think their history speaks in every worn and chipped stone.

Berries and Antiquities, Oil Painting by Linda McCoy

6"X6" Oil on hardboard

On a recent trip to nowhere, just combing the back roads of Ohio looking for treasure, I see a cardboard sign stuck in the dirt that says “Antiquities.” I pull the car up on the gravel parking lot thinking I’ve found the Smithsonian. Out on the lawn there is rusty used to be something everywhere. I can’t wait to see what’s in this place. I’m not disappointed. In the main building which I guess was someone’s home long ago I am greeted by an entryway of chains, old rusted tools, pulleys and horse bridles. So many things I can hardly take it in. But oh, I have only begun. I make a left, and there is a glass case filled with coins and other valuables, behind and behind the counter an array of old musical instruments. There is an area devoted to Armed Forces memorabilia (I think why are there service metals here? Could it be no one in that soldier or sailors family thought to keep them?) On the way to a room filled with every conceivable glass from Coke to Corning, I pass a machine you put a nickel into and view pictures. Looking up I see a few paintings, but I don’t recognize the artists and Google doesn’t either so I move on. This time I enter a room with lots of boxes filled with door knobs and a door with old hats just hanging out. I photograph the door thinking it could be a painting someday. More rooms, small figurines, kitchen gadgets but now I have to escape. More customers, no one can move around so I head to the barn in the back of the house. I feel like I’m on an episode of pickers, but then I think the pickers have already been here. I do see more incredible trappings of the past; chairs, suitcases, books, wooden spools. I take a few pictures and head outside again. Just about finished poking around (but not too much, lots of bees) and then I see it. There’s the painting. Bright berries, reflected in a piece of sheet metal, which at first I thought was a puddle of water. They were everywhere, the junk didn’t matter to them, they just grew around it. I loved the colorful berries against the rust and ruin.
Note to self: Bring a nickel next time!

Kiriana, Oil Portrait on Linen

Both baby portraits were taken from photographs I took at David and Rachel's shower. At the time, I was taken with both babies because they were so absorbed in all activities in the room. Presents were being opened, little cake balls with colorful sprinkles on top were irresistible and so were glasses decorated with aqua polka-dot bows. They watched and took in everything. It's typical I guess to take pictures of the babies when they are smiling, but there is something about their little faces when they are simply watching and learning.  So inquisitive!

Larry, Dreaming of Swedish Fish

So who is Larry? He is a gifted guitar player, he loves to draw, he is very devoted to his family and he loves Swedish Fish candy. My sisters and I always teased him that he was mom's favorite, but then who could resist those blue eyes? Larry was here for a visit recently and he posed for me. We had a great time, everyone is always glad to see him. Anyway, here he is. I loved painting this, I tried really hard not to fiddle too much with the details.

"Julie" Oil on canvas Portrait by Linda McCoy

Mother, daughter, sister, artist and now teacher. Congratulations Julie!

Julie was here for a visit with her children over the holiday. We went shopping one day to a place called “Charming Charlie’s.”  This store would satisfy anyone’s desire to go crazy with accessories. A mere twelve thousand square feet of necklaces, scarves, purses, earrings, leggings, and more.  Everything is arranged by color. I felt I was in the movie “Alice in Wonderland.”
I’ve wanted to paint Julie for some time so when I spotted this necklace I thought “that might be fun to paint.”
So on went the necklace. Too big for Julie, but it was sparkly, and went she sat in the sunshine everything lit up, her face, hair and of course the too big necklace. When I went to paint it I toned down the lights on the necklace and kept the colors cool, so the colors in the necklace didn’t overtake her face.
I had the not so brilliant idea that I would send the necklace around to women I know, have them pose in the necklace, and then mail it on to the next woman on the list.  You know, sort of like the “Sisters of the Traveling Pants” only this would be sisters of the traveling too big necklace.  I thought I would do a hundred or so of these paintings, and then some New York Gallery would trip over themselves to have a showing of the paintings of women in the necklace. Was I crazy? Suffering from delusions? Perhaps too much eggnog for the holiday?  I imagine that the logistics and trying to keep track of the thing would be an adventure in and of itself. (Where is it today? Chicago with Linda? Wisconsin with Marge? Scottsville  with Sharon? Back in Cincinnati with Rachel? No, it’s in New York with Geri who had to be tied to a chair to wear it.)
Well I’ve already exhausted myself just thinking about it. So, here is the lovely Julie in the one and only painting of the necklace. Well maybe.

"Haulin' Pears" Vintage Toy Truck, Oil Painting by Linda McCoy

This little truck is someone’s history. Who knows who it belonged to, how many family members played with it or what their life was like growing up. I wonder about vintage things, they come to us bearing the baggage of their past but they don’t tell. Ah, but the wear marks are telling. This truck was made by MARX. Probably in the 30’s sometime and it was really played with. The yellow is still pretty bright despite its age but some of the rusty areas are worn to the steel. Must have been left out under the porch during rainstorms. Sold

I started this painting in summer before our pears ripened.

I have to go, there’s an episode of American Pickers on. Or is it Antique Roadshow?

Knock Out Roses 2, Oil on canvas by Linda McCoy

During a trip to Chicago this summer we had a lovely family gathering at Linda and Ron's house. After a great brunch and afternoon we left for the long ride home, but not before I took some photo's of Linda's Roses. Beautiful and delicate in color, you could feel the warmth of the sun in each petal. In this case I just abstracted them from my photo reference, hopefully I captured some of the energy of that day.
Thanks again for a great visit Linda!

Sherie's Mom, Portrait oil on canvas by Linda McCoy

Sherie won a portrait in a contest hosted by Faboverfifty. http://www.faboverfifty.com/

 Sherie's words about her mom:

"I really think that is what I would appreciate the most! I just think it would be nice to give to my kids as well as my mom! My mother will be 82 this coming March. She is a strong woman who is taking care of my sister who has Parkinson’s. She also took care of me when my lupus and fibromyalgia was roaring full blast. She is a very giving and loving woman…!!"

It was a pleasure to paint this portrait for Sherie!

Pulleys, Oil Painting by Linda McCoy

You had to walk down the basement stairs and past that spooky coal bin to get to the wringer washer. If you didn’t look in, chances are no one would jump out and get you. Washing was an ordeal. Fill the washer with water, add the Cheer, add clothes and stir with a wood stick. When they were finished, pass them through the wringer at time or two; don’t get your fingers caught in the black cylindrical press. Up the basement stairs with the laundry now weighing three times what it did on the way down.

Outside days were perfect; warm sunshine, blue skies. The clotheslines were attached to the garage and the building with pulleys, so they could be pulled this way and that. The clothespins resided in a white enamel bucket. Rules were followed. Undies were hung on the inside lines, so the neighbors didn’t see them. Socks were pinned to the line by the toe, pants hung by the cuffs, sheets on the outside lines.

We couldn’t wait for the white cotton clotheslines to become worn, for they made the best jump ropes for double dutch. Twenty-forty-sixty-eighty- one, twenty-forty-sixty-eighty two, twenty-forty-sixty-eighty-three…..

Smelling of that indescribably fresh summer air, the dried clothes came off the line, were folded and brought into the house for ironing the next day.

When the Chicago winters came roaring in, the clothes were hung in the basement to dry. Dry they did, stiff as boards.

I have to grab a load of clothes out of the dryer now; the dryer sheets say they are scented with “fresh linen.” Not even close.

Knock Out Rose, Oil Painting by Linda McCoy

These rose bushes are aptly named. We added one to the garden, and it's still blooming, although the Indian Summer days are becoming less frequent. I guess the question of what inspired me to paint it need not be asked, it speaks for itself. This little flower however, is not from our garden but from a garden center. It was posing on a cement planter. Basking in the bright sunlight of a beautiful autumn day.

Same Old Blues, Oil Painting by Linda McCoy

We grew Agapanthus for the first time this summer. They did quite well and I couldn't wait to paint them. I started this painting when the agapanthus were in bloom, and set it aside.  It took a number of days to paint. A few years ago I became intrigued with perfume bottles, this little swan never did get painted, but it seems to have found a home with the blue flowers. The painting is named after a Freddy King song called the "Same Old Blues."

Aidan with Cookies. Portrait by Linda McCoy

Aidan likes Oreo cookies, one side chocolate the other vanilla. The cream insides of these cookies are missing, of course! He loves Spiderman, croissants, and is currently smitten with McKenzie, his preschool pal. He poses for me often, turning his head coyly from one side to another, smiling in his happy innocent world. This was one of those moments.

"Sticky Situation" Oil Painting by Linda McCoy

Yes Ottawa, This is a copyright image!!
4"X4" Oil on panel: Sold
The honey was purchased from a beekeeper we saw at Findlay Market. I was intrigued by the shape of the bottle. When I asked him how the bees were doing after a few years of difficulty he said the hives were better, but that he hadn't lost many, as the other beekeepers had. This is a small painting, but took many days to paint. The smaller the painting, the more important the details become. The light is coming from the east, great morning light. The pears are from our pear tree, we have a bumper crop. Many pears left to paint!

Lemenitis Arthemis Astyanax, Oil Painting by Linda McCoy

“Don’t step on it!” she said to her little ones. At the foot of the stair was a still butterfly. She and her young boys hunkered down in a deep knee bend to observe the tragedy. For an exquisite but brief moment she too, was little again. Wow, look at the colors. Is it dead? Why did it die? What kind is it? Is it a girl or boy butterfly? The conversation lasted as long as there were questions for her to answer.

Their curiosity satisfied, she reminded them it was time to go shopping for school supplies. The boys ran to the car weighted down with last year’s lunch boxes filled with their treasured Star Wars and Spiderman figurines. It’s an important week. Back to school, so many lessons to learn.

Not one more important than the one she just taught them.
