There were three glass boxes in this set. The red one is the largest. This time I filled it with foil wrapped candy, happily distorted because of the glass. Christmas Ornaments first became popular around 1880 and instantly became hit. At that time, the only ornaments that were in the market were German hand-cast lead and hand-blown glass decorations. Until 1925, Germany had almost a monopoly over the Christmas ornament market. Japan gave the first significant shove to Germany's supremacy by producing ornaments in large quantities in newer designs that were more colorful and had an oriental touch and exported them to the United States. Later, Czechoslovakia also entered the competition with several fancy Christmas ornaments. By 1935, more then 250 million Christmas tree ornaments were being imported to America. The first American company started producing Christmas ornaments significantly only in 1939, due to the outbreak of World War II. Christmas ball and bauble ornaments have been quite popular since then. Keepsake Christmas Ornaments first appeared in 1973 as decorated glass balls and yarn figures. Later, they expanded to include Christmas ornament handicrafts such as bone china, porcelain, paper mache, wood and acrylic ornaments. Glass angels, stiff spun glass butterfly wings, flower baskets and vases decorated with tinsel, air balloons with tinsel and egg zeppelins have been the hot favorites during the holiday season.Some people like to display their Christmas ornaments even after the Holiday Season is over, just to remind them that there is happiness and cheer around the corner. Special ornaments can be enjoyed year after year and some of the most popular ones are Christmas Stars, Santa Claus and his elves ornaments, Snowflake and feather ornaments and Christmas angel ornaments. The variety and styles of Christmas ornaments has increased to a much wider collection since then as they have evolved into much more sophisticated and expensive decoration items. Glass Ornament lll

This is another of the large hand blown glass ornaments. This one is red. I decorated my tree today and when I saw the Santa ornament through the glass and the reflections from my window I was inspired to paint it. The Santa ornament is white, but because of the tint of the glass he appears red. The tree lights behind the ornament appeared a reddish yellow through the globe. Glass Ornament

6"X6" Oil on gallery wrapped stretched canvas. Just when I thought I was running out of inspiration, I went into the Garden Gate, a gift shop in Lebanon Ohio. (http://www.thegardengate.net/)I was looking for a gift for someone, but was really taken with these large handblown glass ornaments. The owner kindly let me take some photographs, although she may still be scratching her head. Everything in the shop was reflected in the glass and since they were transparent you could see through them as well. Interesting to paint. I bought two of these so I could get the color of the tinted glass right. I love this painting.

Windblown

6"X6" Oil on gallery wrapped stretched canvas. Bree, sitting on a bale of hay at a farm in Lebanon, Ohio. She was just staring out into a field. The south sun provided a good light, and the wind was really whipping her hair around. I underpainted in permanent rose, cadmium yellow light to try and hold onto the sunlit feel of the day.

Listening

It's hard to sketch from a television program, but it can work out ok. You have to be really fast.
This was fun. I named it "Listening" because this was Whoopi's first few months on the view. She seemed to be taking it all in, sometimes in amazement I would guess, just trying to get a word in. I wondered what she was thinking.
I think she has brought a good balance to this show, she just has good common sense and her sense of humor is wonderful.

Apple in an Old Metal Bowl

6"X6" Oil on gallery wrapped stretched canvas. I picked up this old dented bowl in an antique store, I've had it so long I can't remember where. I always thought it would be fun to paint, all dented with great patina. This gray is permanent rose and Winsor green mixed with white. Since these colors are the colors for the bowl and apple, it created a nice harmony of color between the background and the subject. I lost a few of the edges, to give it a soft look. Fiestaware Creamer and Lemons

6" X 6" Oil on gallery wrapped stretched canvas. I like the shape of this little turquoise creamer. I started it a few weeks ago but put it aside in a corner of my studio. Good thing I painted the lemons in first, when I went back to the set up the lemons were mummified. I like the way light peeks through and around the lemons.

Until Next Summer, Yellow Dahlias

6"X6" Oil on Gallery wrapped stretched canvas. These are the last of the Dahlias, they were so pretty all summer, but the weather has turned cold. A little green hand blown glass vase. I resisted the urge to overpaint, and just let the underpainting of permanent rose, cadmium red and cadmium yellow do it's job. I worked on a very tightly rendered still life most of the day, didn't finish, so I used what paint was left on my palette for this little one.

Pyramid Hill Art Festival

Hung Out to Dry

It has been incredibly dry in the Ohio River Valley, crispy is the word that comes to mind. I almost missed these drying sunflowers at the Farmer's Market in Lebanon, hanging on one of the poles that supports a tent. This one will make a great feast for the Cardinals and Jays, that is unless that pesky squirrel figures out a way to it first.
