No telling what effect the bright sun is going to have on these transparent bottles until you set them up. Sunlight bouncing all all over, reflections, shadows, reflected light, light passing through the amber liquid. Warm light, cool light, warm shadows, cool shadows. Sad when the painting was finished, it was fun and challenging.

Yellow Primroses. I named the painting after the old song "Primrose Lane." These are really a bright yellow, and when I set them up in the sunlight it was a "wow." I spritzed the plant with water just before painting, and I almost omitted the waterdrops as they are just the devil to paint. They decided to behave themselves.

Pink Pink Pink! Cyclamen Floral by Linda McCoy

Light Pink Cyclamen, these flowers looked like they were dancing! The bright centers went well with the surrounding flowers, perhaps Primroses. It's been so snowy, rainy and cold and the garden centers are a nice get a way. There is another Orchid Show at the Krohn Conservatory in Cincinnati this week-end. I am so there!

Phalaenopsis Orchid, Cobalt Violet Pink by Linda McCoy

I bought these beautiful Orchids quite simply at a Kroger near where I live. Anxious to paint them I mixed color after color to get the violet right. I never did. Frustrated and hoping that the Orchids didn't die in the meantime, I emailed Eric at Blue Ridge and he sent me this beautiful color. Cobalt Violet Pink. It matched the orchids perfectly. The darker pink is Quin. Rose Red, also from Blue Ridge. http://www.blueridgeoilpaint.com/ A little cadmium red scarlet was added to the centers along with cad. yellow light. The background is smalt and Winsor Green. I am working on these orchids in a larger format for a gallery but I wanted to try a little daily painting to see how the color performed. I love it! The fashion designers are showing lots of purple in their fall collections, so home decor can't be far behind. Purple is the color of royalty!

The Orchid Show, Still LIfe by Linda McCoy

Visited the Cox Arboretum MetroPark, 6733 Springboro Pk. in Dayton today. They had a lovely orchid show. The vendors had huge plants in full bloom for sale. The color was outstanding, especially against the February gray background. Rows and rows of beautiful orchids. I could never grow them but they are so wonderful to paint. Yes, of course I bought some! Hopefully they'll last long enough for a few larger paintings. The orchid show continues through tomorrow.

Bodies

Today I saw the controversial exhibit "Bodies....The Exhibition" at the Cincinnati Museum Center. In less than an hour 20/20 will report on how the bodies were obtained. I'm not sure how I will feel about it after I watch the program. I can say that I found the exhibit to be remarkable, thought provoking and disturbing all at once. Every muscle, blood vessel, bone and nerve was visible. Flayed. It was very crowded with school groups from all over the area. It was quiet, very unusual for so many kids. Teachers talking to the students explaining and watching so no one touched the bodies. It sounded as though many of the teachers prepared with classes ahead of time. Sketching was very quick and limited because of the crowds, but I managed to get a few in. I would like to go back on a quiet day and spend more time drawing and observing. For whatever reason I was intrigued by their hands.

Lavender Marbles, Pink Tulip Still Life by Linda McCoy

Ever on the quest for something newer, I went shopping for a simple bag of marbles. What I found were ugly opaque yellow, brown and just a few cat's eyes. What on earth happened to all the pretty marbles that were around when we were kids? There you go I'm starting to sound like Andy Rooney. Can't be having that! So, I went on the internet and of course found a great marble company http://www.rainbowturtle.com/ . For those who really do collect marbles this place must be heaven. Anyway I ordered three bags of mixed cat's eyes, they were very nice and assured me that I would have enough of every color. They were at my door in three days and I was off and running.
The sun was out this morning, so back to the east window I went with my still life. There's something fun about painting these little set ups. The color of these marbles is lavender, but picking up a little local color from reflections. The little curvy vase was a little fun shape, the tulip won't last another day. Broken Heart

When you paint things from life, whether out in the elements or in your studio, there's bound to be a mishap once in awhile. I was almost finished with the heart painting yesterday when I accidently knocked it and it went crashing to the floor. I was about to sweep up the pieces when I noticed the red reflections cast on the floor. I decided to paint them today following the "when life gives you lemons make lemonade" thought process. Sad little painting, and unfortunately for some it's the current state of their heart.

I found this glass heart at ArtonSymmes in Fairfield, Ohio. Since my last several paintings have included glass objects, I thought I would give the red glass a try. It was the most difficult of all of the glass paintings I've tried so far. So many reds! I worked on it on and off for two days. Funny how the "painting a day" concept runs in to a brick wall when tackling a more difficult painting.

Red Carnations

I tried a new color green on my palette, Cobalt Green Light from Blue Ridge Artist Supply http://www.blueridgeartist.com/ I liked the warmth of the color. It made a nice gray when mixed with smalt and a little white, and brightened nicely with the addition of cad. yellow medium. All of these are handmade pigments. The little hand blown glass vase speaks to my love of Art Noveau.

Pink Tulip with Blue Marble Still Life by Linda McCoy

I thought the shape of this little vase was pleasing, and the light bouncing around created a nice abstract design. Again, the set up was in an east window in morning sunlight.

Happy 50th Birthday Ellen!

I painted this from the show of Friday Jan 25th. It was her birthday celebration show and she was sitting very still for a few moments while listening to callers wish her a happy birthday. I first saw her in person the summer before her first sit com, she was performing at a corporate meeting. She was funny of course, talking about deer having a party and oh look here come the guys in the orange vests. I really like her daytime show, she still makes me laugh. Painting glass is challenging and every highlight matters. I am working on a few larger pieces but I manage to get sidetracked by whatever new subject that inspires me. I think the little 6"X6" oils are addictive, and the challenge is not only the process of painting but of finding new inspiration. It finds me somehow when I least expect it.

Running like a crazy tourist to shop at the Ponte Vecchio, I almost missed these little guys. They seemed to be watching the people. The bakery had positioned them like mannequins, and they seemed to be interacting. I snapped a quick photo through the bakery window, but I still have regrets that I didn't run in and purchase one. They still make me laugh, even though this trip was last March. Still Life with Orange Dish

Studio Photo

The Daily Painters Gallery posted studio pictures today. This is mine on a good day this October. Mostly props and watercolor supplies behind the easel. I'm a fanatic about keeping the oils away from the watercolor brushes and paper. The two watercolors on the back wall are works in progress, the pastel of the young man is finished, the glass cracked at an outdoor fair and he needs to be reframed. Happily the painting on the easel sold.

Castello di Verrazzano, Chianti Region, Italy

This is a watercolor sketch competed on site at the Verrazzano Winery. What a great day. My friends went on the wine tour and the executive tour guide Gillian allowed me to sit in one of the towers and paint. I did two watercolors. Although this trip was in March of this year, nothing brings back the memory of this vacation like looking at the sketches. The castle was built in 700, and it is just beautiful. My sketchbook notes say all the windows are a different size, and I remember having to really look as my brain wanted to paint them all the same in neat rows. So much stone. Parts of it warmed by the sun, others in cool shadows. I could have painted more except someone called me in for the wine tasting. Fabulous wine and food mixed with stories about the castle's colorful past. (Was one of the family really served up for dinner by the natives while exploring off of the coast of Florida? Yipes!) I really didn't intend to do another ornament, but I was browsing in Pottery Barn yesterday and saw this one. A little glass reindeer inside of a glass ornament. I couldn't resist giving it a try. I hung it on a small old fiber optic tree we have in the basement. The backlighting worked so I was glad I tried it. I am finished with the ornaments until next year. Honest.

Christmas Ornaments first became popular around 1880 and instantly became hit. At that time, the only ornaments that were in the market were German hand-cast lead and hand-blown glass decorations. Until 1925, Germany had almost a monopoly over the Christmas ornament market. Japan gave the first significant shove to Germany's supremacy by producing ornaments in large quantities in newer designs that were more colorful and had an oriental touch and exported them to the United States. Later, Czechoslovakia also entered the competition with several fancy Christmas ornaments. By 1935, more then 250 million Christmas tree ornaments were being imported to America. The first American company started producing Christmas ornaments significantly only in 1939, due to the outbreak of World War II. Christmas ball and bauble ornaments have been quite popular since then. Keepsake Christmas Ornaments first appeared in 1973 as decorated glass balls and yarn figures. Later, they expanded to include Christmas ornament handicrafts such as bone china, porcelain, paper mache, wood and acrylic ornaments. Glass angels, stiff spun glass butterfly wings, flower baskets and vases decorated with tinsel, air balloons with tinsel and egg zeppelins have been the hot favorites during the holiday season.Some people like to display their Christmas ornaments even after the Holiday Season is over, just to remind them that there is happiness and cheer around the corner. Special ornaments can be enjoyed year after year and some of the most popular ones are Christmas Stars, Santa Claus and his elves ornaments, Snowflake and feather ornaments and Christmas angel ornaments. The variety and styles of Christmas ornaments has increased to a much wider collection since then as they have evolved into much more sophisticated and expensive decoration items. This is another of the large hand blown glass ornaments. This one is red. I decorated my tree today and when I saw the Santa ornament through the glass and the reflections from my window I was inspired to paint it. The Santa ornament is white, but because of the tint of the glass he appears red. The tree lights behind the ornament appeared a reddish yellow through the globe.
