Cornflowers, Oil Painting by Linda McCoy

Cornflowers line the sides of the roads now, they seem to go on forever. T picked these for me, the flowers immediately folded. I was ready to pitch the bunch but he said leave them and see what happens in the morning. Happily new buds had opened the next day which allowed me time to paint them. I worked fast, unsure of how long they would remain open. This is an old copper pot with much patina. I found it in an antique shop in Maysville, Kentucky a few years ago. This is the fourth time I've painted it, it just feels right.

So here is a different subject matter for me. I found this deer skull in a place called Fort Ancient Trading Post. There are really no words for the place, so I have attached a link, with pictures and directions. It is a great place for antique hunters, painters looking for props, and just general junking. This painting was named by my brother, who seems to always have the right name for my paintings. Thanks L!

L'Eté Fleurit, Watercolor by Linda McCoy

1.      The drawing is done with an H pencil, easier to erase if you don’t want your pencil lines to show. It is on an 8”x8” Sennelier watercolor block.

2.      I used Winsor Newton colors;  Cobalt Blue, Cerulean Blue, French Ultramarine Blue, Antwerp, Windsor Yellow, Aureolin, Paynes Gray, Windsor Red, Permanent Rose. (If you have never used Windsor Red, use caution, making sure it is well mixed with water.) It can create a beautiful glow but try it first on a scrap piece of watercolor.

3.      The round brushes are Windsor Newton red sable series 7, size 1, 3, 5 and 7. The flat is a Raphael sable.

4.      For the first wash, I used Cobalt Blue, Windsor yellow and Windsor Red, I activated the colors with water, but didn’t dilute too much.

5.      I sprayed the paper surface with water, and let the excess drip off

6.      I applied the paint to the wet paper, yellow where the sunflowers were, pink on the Gerbera Daisies, and blue where the Delphiniums are placed. Working quickly, I lightly sprayed the surface again and allowed the colors to run together, tilting the paper until I achieved the saturation I was looking for, and allowing the colors to blend. I never play in the wash with the brush. I apply the colors once, spray to achieve the desired effect and then leave it alone.

7.      Let the paper dry. This may take a couple of hours if you are using watercolor block. How do you know when it’s dry? When it is no longer cold to the touch.

8.      I then began to add glazes of color to the flowers. Permanent Rose for the Daisies, Aureolin for the sunflowers. Cobalt Blue and Cerulean for the Delphiniums. The greens were made with the yellow and cobalt blue or Antwerp. Ultramarine blue was also used to mix greens. A brighter green was used for the Bells of Ireland. The bottom of the jug is Paynes gray, the jug is Windsor Red mixed with one of the green mixtures and a little yellow to make brown.

9.      A little more than half way through the painting I darkened the line where the table met the wall. I also used that same color for the shadow under the jug. I allowed that to dry and then began to glaze the jug and flowers again. Copyright Linda McCoy 7-21-2012

The Grape Escape, Oil painting by Linda McCoy

This painting is aptly named “The Grape Escape” by my brother who has recently taken on the task of naming my paintings. (Thanks Larry!)

These are the largest most beautiful grapes, and oh so sweet! I like these wine glasses purchased from Pier One Imports. I set the still life up in the east sun as is often my practice. I am forever amazed at how the sunshine can turn an ordinary object into a sparkling, light refracting, illuminated miracle. The painting is my attempt to recapture that moment in the sun.

This hand blown glass pumpkin was given to me by my daughter. When I set it up with the pears in the sunlight the reflections and lights were bouncing around all over the place. So much fun to paint! The pears are from our tree, these two managed to survive the bees, wasps and those little stinker squirrels.
I text my brother regularily to name my paintings. I love the name he came up with for this one.

California Dreamin' Watercolor Painting by Linda McCoy

I love painting Hydrangeas. Mostly abstract shapes of light and color. This one is in watercolor, and a very different palette of colors than I usually use.
There is a time in the midwest when the autumn leaves have fallen, but before the first snow that is so gray, cold and damp. It's this time of year that I wish I was in the bright California sunshine with some of the sweetest people I know. :)

This is my little buddy Aidan and his very old kitty named Lucy. Wherever there is a patch of sunshine you will find her. This day Aidan was just sitting in the sun with her, she was content to be pet while he was dreaming of Power Rangers. Lucy is a rescue kitty, she was the runt of the litter, a sad little thing so home she came.  Aidan helps to take good care of her.

Wicked Cute Italian Shoes, Oil Painting by Linda McCoy

After a long shopping day in Lucca, Italy my friends and I unwrapped our treasures. I bought these for my daughter. Wondering if she would like them I asked Sharon to try them on. She stuck her feet up in the air and said "These shoes are wicked cute, I should have bought myself a pair!" I snapped a picture, (glad I did) and was able to borrow the shoes back from my daughter to paint.

I started this painting on July 4^th of this year; these horses were on parade on our street. I took several photographs and started the painting that day while the memory was still fresh. The tack detail took a long time to accomplish, at one point I set the painting aside in frustration. Perseverance won out in the end and I finished it today.

This small hand blown glass pumpkin was a treasure Bree found at a Renaissance fair this September. I set it up in the sun with some of the largest, sweetest and most delicious grapes I have ever had. This painting took several weeks to create, layers and layers of transparent colors; I loved doing all of the details.

Ohio Pumpkin Farm

Garver Family Farm, Monroe, Ohio.  This is a great place to visit, and on this day it was quite cloudy. The close-up pumpkins in the field were not visible as the foliage pretty much covered them, but in the distance you could see the orange peeking through. Autumn has settled in. Abandoned Farm by Linda McCoy

This painting is of an abandoned farm in Ohio. It has been vacant for several years, and it didn’t take long for the fields to return to wildflowers. Purple statice, blue cornflowers, yellow dandelions and white Queen Anne’s lace have grown over much of the property. The old farm house windows are boarded up with big sheets of plywood, and during the autumn it looks really spooky. I started this painting mid-summer, then set it aside while I worked on a few other paintings. It looks peaceful to me; quiet, hazy and warm like so many summer days here. Someday the land will be purchased, the old farmhouse torn down like so many others, and a new strip center will take its place, but in the summer of 2011 this is how it looks.

Opera Del Duomo, Orvieto

Here is another of the Italian doorways, this one is in Orvieto, a small and lovely hill town between Florence and Rome. The Duomo there is magnificent, architecture, art, it has it all.  You take a lift up to the town, from there you can see the beautiful countryside. This door says “Opera del Duomo,” and it is positioned across the Piazza to the right as you face the Duomo.  The Cathedral steps are dangerous, two people in our group fell, there is a narrow trough of stone right at the bottom of the stairway; wear flat shoes!  I loved this town and this is one of my favorite doorways.

Sunrise

When I was a kid we visited  Field Museum in Chicago often. Their butterfly collection was large, colorful and now, years later still inspirational. It's not hard to figure out where many textile patterns and their color combinations come from. I think this is a Sunset butterfly, but I named the painting "Sunrise" because that's where hope lives.   Sold

After the Rain, Painting by Linda McCoy

It's easy to over paint and over complicate water drops. I keep it really simple, paint the shadow (looks like a smile!) and highlight with one drop of white. I used a number 1 small round brush.  Nothing else is really necessary; the drops are transparent so the color they sit on does not need adjustment. The more you paint and fuss with them, the more contrived they look.

While in Italy a few years ago, I photographed every door I possibly could. Friends thought I was crazy, but stop we did at every doorway I felt I needed to paint. This is one of them. I have about a jillion doorways to go. I like that they are aged and scruffy, I think their history speaks in every worn and chipped stone.

6"X6" Oil on hardboard

On a recent trip to nowhere, just combing the back roads of Ohio looking for treasure, I see a cardboard sign stuck in the dirt that says “Antiquities.” I pull the car up on the gravel parking lot thinking I’ve found the Smithsonian. Out on the lawn there is rusty used to be something everywhere. I can’t wait to see what’s in this place. I’m not disappointed. In the main building which I guess was someone’s home long ago I am greeted by an entryway of chains, old rusted tools, pulleys and horse bridles. So many things I can hardly take it in. But oh, I have only begun. I make a left, and there is a glass case filled with coins and other valuables, behind and behind the counter an array of old musical instruments. There is an area devoted to Armed Forces memorabilia (I think why are there service metals here? Could it be no one in that soldier or sailors family thought to keep them?) On the way to a room filled with every conceivable glass from Coke to Corning, I pass a machine you put a nickel into and view pictures. Looking up I see a few paintings, but I don’t recognize the artists and Google doesn’t either so I move on. This time I enter a room with lots of boxes filled with door knobs and a door with old hats just hanging out. I photograph the door thinking it could be a painting someday. More rooms, small figurines, kitchen gadgets but now I have to escape. More customers, no one can move around so I head to the barn in the back of the house. I feel like I’m on an episode of pickers, but then I think the pickers have already been here. I do see more incredible trappings of the past; chairs, suitcases, books, wooden spools. I take a few pictures and head outside again. Just about finished poking around (but not too much, lots of bees) and then I see it. There’s the painting. Bright berries, reflected in a piece of sheet metal, which at first I thought was a puddle of water. They were everywhere, the junk didn’t matter to them, they just grew around it. I loved the colorful berries against the rust and ruin.
Note to self: Bring a nickel next time!

Kiriana, Oil Portrait on Linen

Both baby portraits were taken from photographs I took at David and Rachel's shower. At the time, I was taken with both babies because they were so absorbed in all activities in the room. Presents were being opened, little cake balls with colorful sprinkles on top were irresistible and so were glasses decorated with aqua polka-dot bows. They watched and took in everything. It's typical I guess to take pictures of the babies when they are smiling, but there is something about their little faces when they are simply watching and learning.  So inquisitive!
